The Massac Memorial Hospital Department of Cardiac Rehabilitation is dedicated to helping those in our
community suffering from heart disease and its after-effects. Our state-of-the-art facility is staffed by a team
of professionals dedicated to helping our patients live a long and fulfilling life with a healthy heart

Welcome to the Massac Memorial Hospital Department of Cardiac Rehabilitation. We are here to help those in our community suffering from heart disease and its after-effects in a state-of-the-art facility staffed by a team of professionals dedicated to helping our patients live a long and fulfilling life with a healthy heart.

Our Services

Our program is designed to help anyone with heart disease through a combination of tailored and supervised exercise plans, nutrition, counseling, and health education aimed at increasing cardiac endurance and reducing future complications.

Studies by the American Medical Association (AMA) highlight the benefits of cardiac rehabilitation and Medicare has recently expanded the types of heart diagnoses and procedures eligible for coverage. Exercise training has been shown to increase general cardiac capacity and reduce cardiac work and oxygen requirements. More specifically, rehabilitation programs have been shown to improve blood vessel function, coronary blood flow and electrical stability of the heart muscle, while reducing general cardiovascular risk factors, and the possibility of blood clots.

Research shows that participants in exercise-based rehabilitation are 26% less likely to suffer fatal heart complications than non-participants; they also had 21% fewer heart attacks, 13% fewer bypass surgeries and 19% fewer angioplasties.

The Massac Memorial Cardiac Rehabilitation department offers:

• Baseline and follow-up patient assessments
• Individually tailored exercise programs
• Customized strategies managing cholesterol, diabetes, blood pressure, weight and other
   modifiable cardiovascular risk factors
• Nutritional and smoking cessation counseling
• Prescription drug therapy and support
• Psychosocial and vocational/occupational counseling

Let us help you make a strong recovery and maintain a healthy heart for life.

Fast Facts

Is Heart Disease Really a Leading Killer of Women?
Heart disease is the number one cause of death among women in the United States, killing approximately 500,000 women every year. But women and their doctors continue to underestimate women's heart disease risk. As a result, women are less likely than men to receive aggressive treatment and are more likely to die of heart disease.

What are the most common types of heart disease?
Eight million U.S. women are currently living with heart disease. Cardiovascular disease, or heart disease, includes many conditions, but the most common type is coronary artery disease, which is also the most preventable. Coronary artery disease involves blockages in the arteries caused by plaque build-up. If this plaque progresses or ruptures, heart attack or sudden death can result. Click here to learn more.
